What are recommended mix proportions for good concrete?

Quality mix proportions for good concrete concrete mix What are recommended mix proportions for good concrete? concrete out of chuteGood concrete can be obtained by using a wide variety of mix proportions if proper mix design procedures are used. A good general rule to use is the rule of 6’s:
• A minimum cement content of 6 bags per cubic yard of concrete (3,000 PSI),
 • A maximum water content of 6 gallons per bag of cement,
 • A curing period (keeping concrete moist) a minimum of 6 days, and
 • An air content of 6 percent (if concrete will be subject to freezing and thawing).
Before pouring concrete, Harmon Concrete will typically design a concrete mix based on the type of project we’re about to pour.

Foundation footings and walls are usually poured using a 3,000 PSI mix and is usually more than sufficient for most foundation purposes.

For interior concrete work which is not exposed to freeze thaw cycles, a 3,000 PSI mix without air entrainment should work great for our customers.

We will usually take a few extra precautions when we know freezing and thawing cycles will eventually take its toll. We recommend a 7 bag mix or 4,000 PSI concrete with a 6-8% air entrainment and low slump in the 3-4″ range to avoid spalling of the surface from the winter weather.

Depending on weather conditions, we may add fiber mesh and a retarder to help the workability of the concrete and avoid shrinkage cracks.

When we stamp concrete, we use rock that’s 3/4″, 4,000 PSI and air if it’s subject to freezing and thawing.
