Polishing The Worst Concrete Ever – Completed

Residential Polished Concrete With Glass, Rocks and Aluminum. polishing the worst concrete ever Polishing The Worst Concrete Ever – Completed Residential Polished Concrete11 300x225Polishing The Worst Concrete Ever

Harmon Concrete has recently finished polishing the worst concrete ever! This could have been considered polishing the worst concrete in the world, but exaggerating won’t get us anywhere. We’ve seen much, much worse.

If you read our previous article on polishing the worst concrete ever, you’ll get a better understanding of what happened with the concrete.

The homeowners, who own a small glass shop, wanted to “seed” the concrete with little pieces of glass, mirror and aluminum. The glass pieces ranged in size from very tiny to around 1″ in diameter. Some of the aluminum pieces were 1/8″ in diameter to 3/4″ in diameter.

Seeding the concrete before it’s polished is an excellent way of adding character to a polished concrete floor. We’ve seen concrete seeded with everything from glass and aluminum to specialized rocks that glow in the dark. The possibilities are endless.

The picture to the top right should give you a nice indication as to what we had to work with.

Problems For Polished Concrete

While no concrete slab is going to be absolutely perfect, it helps if the concrete is as level as the concrete finisher can get it. The concrete finishers responsible for this particular concrete slab left it everything but level.

When we arrived at the job site, the homeowner was embarrassed and walked around the slab with us pointing out each and every flaw. There were many.

Please keep in mind that as you’re reading this, our goal is not to belittle the concrete company who finished the concrete. Our goal is to point out that, no matter how bad a concrete slab is, no matter what condition it’s currently in, Harmon Concrete can polish it.

The homeowner indicated to us that the concrete finishers at some point simply walked off the job and left it for the home builder to complete, which he did.

What Was Wrong?

  • There was not a smooth place anywhere to be found
  • The concrete had ridges all over
  • The concrete was not properly “screeded” or leveled
  • Poured too wet which caused cracking and scaling
  • In some places, the edges were 3/4″ out of level

The Concrete Is Finally Polished

After 4 very long days of repairs, grinding and polishing this concrete slab, I’m proud to say it turned out even better than we expected without performing a complete polished concrete overlay.

While a polished concrete overlay would have been the best solution for this particular concrete slab, it simply wasn’t in the budget for our homeowners. By the way, our homeowners were awesome to work with! They’re truly some great people!
