Why Is Concrete Floor Surface Preparation Important?

Surface Prep Why Is Concrete Floor Surface Preparation Important? Surface Prep 300x224Floor surface preparation is the most important step for just about any type of decorative flooring. Without proper floor preparation, most decorative concrete overlays, epoxy floors and even epoxy tile will have a rough time bonding to the concrete floor.

Floor surface preparation is not just used in the residential home. Commercial and Industrial floors need to be prepared properly before placing any type of material.

Our surface prep machines are designed to help level the concrete as well as remove stubborn stains.

When concrete is first poured and finished, it is most likely finished using what we call a concrete power trowel. A concrete power trowel is a machine with 4 steel blades. As these blades turn, it aids in sealing the top portion of the concrete slab. If you look in just about any garage, you’ll see what we refer to as a “machine finish.”

So how can you tell if your concrete has been properly prepared? It’s quite simple. Pour a small amount of water on the concrete slab and see how long it takes to soak into the concrete. If the surface preparation has been properly completed, the water should completely soak in within a minute. If the water sits on top of the slab, epoxy or other concrete overlay materials will have nothing to bond to. They will eventually peel and need to be removed.

It’s important to keep in mind that when applying an epoxy over a properly prepared concrete surface, at least 1-2 coats of primer should be applied prior to installing the epoxy.

When machine profiling a concrete surface, the concrete will become weak. It will also become a more breathable surface allowing air to rise from the bottom of the concrete. Air bubbles and epoxy do not mix.
