Asphalt Pothole Repair

Asphalt Pothole in Parking Lot asphalt pothole Asphalt Pothole Repair Asphalt PotholeAsphalt potholes are not only a parking lot nightmare, but it could hurt the bottom line on your place of business. Once a pothole fills with water, its size is accelerated with every pass of a vehicle as the water washes away the loose particles of road surface.

Asphalt pothole deterioration is also accelerated by our freeze/thaw cycles, in which the water under the asphalt freezes during colder temperatures, pushing the asphalt upward as it expands. When the ice melts, a void is left between the base and the asphalt, causing the asphalt to collapse under vehicle traffic.

What causes potholes?

  1. Tiny cracks begin to form in asphalt parking lots or asphalt driveways as it ages. These cracks allow water to get under the surface and weaken the base.
  2. More water gets into the base and it begins to erode, leaving a void between the base and the asphalt.
  3. The weight of vehicles can’t be supported by the weakened base, so more cracks form and begin to interlock in a pattern known as “alligator cracking”.
  4. Over the course of time, regular vehicle traffic  will work the chunks of asphalt between the cracks loose and, once a chunk is picked out of the surface, the pothole continues to grow through continued removal of broken chunks of asphalt.
